Many fishermen know the fun of presenting dry flies and small clousers to our plentiful sea run cutthroat trout\u00a0 but when the spring and summer tides are right and fish on the bite we&#8217;ll\u00a0occasionally\u00a0switch over to the Fly Fishing gear and enjoy some really exciting catch and release fishing for the toothy denizens of our local reefs. Stout rods in 9-12 weight with heavy sinking lines and big bucktail streamer and clousers\u00a0is the\u00a0proper\u00a0gear.\u00a0\u00a0We work\u00a0on\u00a0casting then drifting\u00a0flies down to reef level and the fish often cooperate enthusiastically.\u00a0 Black rockfish are somewhat pelagic and chase presented flies all the way to the surface.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peninsulasportsman.com\/blog\/fly-fishing-port-townsend\/attachment\/blackbass1-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-646\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"black seabass\" src=\"https:\/\/peninsulasportsman.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/blackbass11-140x105.jpg\" alt=\"black seabass\" width=\"140\" height=\"105\" \/><\/a> Copper rockfish, greenling\u00a0and lingcod will attack when your fly gets\u00a0closer to the reef.\u00a0 Most of these fish are in the 1-6 lb range but hang on as LARGE lingcod have been known to chomp down on flies and then the battle really\u00a0gets interesting !<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>~ Conventional fishing\u00a0gear isn&#8217;t the only way to enjoy our often &#8220;wide open&#8221; bottomfishing here on the Peninsula.
